Description
Petitioners
William de Cleydon (Claydon).
Name(s)
de Cleydon (Claydon), William
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Cleydon shows that it is contained in Magna Carta that any free man is able to erect a mill in his own land as long as it is not to the nuisance of his neighbours. He has erected a windmill in Sudbourne for his use and the use of his men and others. However the keeper and his under-bailiffs by colour of their office have come and taken by force his corn and that of others for milling and has detained their corn to their damage and disinheritance. He requests that it be ordained that certain justices enquire about this trespass as he was disinherited without there being a judgement.
Nature of endorsement
Cleydon and others so oppressed should have a remedy against Sturmyn and his bailiffs at the common law for the corn that was taken.
Places mentioned
Sudbourne, [Suffolk]
Orford, [Suffolk].
People mentioned
John Sturmyn, keeper of the castle of Orford.
