Reference
SC 8/39/1937
Date
[1338-1343]
Description
Petitioners
Isabel Cleterne, (Cleator), widow of Richard de Cleterne.
Name(s)
Cleterne, (Cleator), Isabel
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Cleterne shows that she was abducted from her manor by Culwen and others from her manor to Aykhurst castle and was held there until rescued by the power and aid of Lucy. Now the malefactors by their proctors are seeking charters of pardon. She requests that for the honour of women that this peace be denied them, because charters of pardon are so commonly granted by the procurement of those close to the king, regardless of the statute lately made so that the law is no longer feared especially on the March as they can flee to Scotland after committing their felonies.
Nature of endorsement
He does not wish them to have pardons.
Places mentioned
Ellenborough, Cumberland
Aykhurst Castle [unidentified].
People mentioned
Richard de Cleterne, late husband of petitioner
Adam [de Culwen], son of Gilbert de Culwen, uncle of the petitioner
Antony de Lucy.
Note
There is no reason to question Fraser's dating of this petition to 1338-1343, Isabel Cleterne's husband being still alive in April 1338, and Lucy being dead by June 1343 (Northern Petitions, p.100).
