Description
Petitioners
William le Clerk of Shoreston; Thomas Fitz Warin of Shoreston.
Name(s)
Clerk; Fitz Warin, William; Thomas
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners show that whereas the king impleaded their ancestors for their tenement in Bamburgh in his thirtieth years and alleged that the lands owed the service of keeping the gate of his castle of Bamburgh. However before an inquisition could be held on this the escheator north of the Trent on his own authority seized the land into the king's hand. They request grace and remedy by a writ of inquest or in another manner as the king will wish to ordain.
Nature of endorsement
It is answered by another petition in a similar case, namely that they should have a writ in Chancery to the escheator that he should certify the king and council both why the tenement was taken into the hand of the king, by what right, and in what manner, and return the writ before the king.
Places mentioned
Shoreston, [Northumberland]
Bamburgh, [Northumberland].
Note
The petition is dated by Fraser to 1302-1307 citing suits concerning land and the serjeanty of keeping the gate. There is no reason to discount this dating (Northumberland Petitions, pp.54-5).
