SC 8/39/1911
Date
[c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
William le Caudroner of the King's Chandlery.
Name(s)
Caudroner, William
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Caudroner shows that he had a tenement in Berwick of the gift of the king, because he was in the king's service he made Queldrik his attorney to handle matters concerning it. Afterwards the king's ministers proclaimed that all those holding tenements in Berwick of gift of the king should come before them at a certain day. Because he was in the king's service he did not come and his attorney was ousted and the tenement was given to Langton who still holds it. He requests the king's grace that he should not lose the tenement by this petit reason.
Nature of endorsement
He should come into Chancery and in the same place should have a writ to the keeper of Scotland to view and examine the inquisition of Caudroner and the charters of both parties, and he should do justice to the petitioner in that part so that the king does not hear any further of it.
Places mentioned
Berewik sur Twede (Berwick-upon-Tweed), [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Walter de Queldrik, Attorney of William le Caudroner
Edmund de Hastyngges (Hastings), then Keeper of Berwick
John Spark
William de Thorp (Thorpe)
Nicholas de Markham
William de Langeton (Langton).
Note
The petition must date to the period 1315-1318 as Hastings had been replaced as keeper of Berwick by 3 May 1315, and the town had fallen to the Scots by 1318. Indeed one has to ask why the petitioner would want to recover such land in the period of Scottish hegemony in the north (CPR 1313-17, p.328).
