Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/39/1903
Date
[? 1295-? 1304]
Description
Petitioners
William de Chalouns (Chalons), burgess of Conway.
Name(s)
de Chalouns (Chalons), William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
burgess of Conway
Nature of request
Chalouns shows that during the last Welsh war Colombers sold herrings of store to him and other burgesses for which they paid him. The money is now demanded by a writ under the privy seal. Since he can show that he and the other burgesses have paid the money he requests remedy.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered to the justice of Wales that he should inquire whether this money has been paid and certify the Exchequer, and let a writ be made on this. In the meantime he should have respite.
Places mentioned
Conway, [Caernarvonshire, Wales]
Gales (Wales).
People mentioned
Matthew de Colombers
Roger le Porter, burgess of Conway
Adam Gannok, burgess of Conway
Henry Baldewyne (Baldwin), burgess of Conway
Constable of Conway.
Note
The petition refers to the last war with Wales, and to Matthew de Columbers. Columbers died between January and May 1299, so that a reasonable though speculative date would place this at 1295 (CCR 1296-1302, pp. 229, 251). Rees dates this to 1295-1304, linking it to another similar entry (Petitions Relating to Wales, p.54).
