Description
Petitioners
Chancellor and clerks of the University of Cambridge.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners show that the king's predecessors granted to them that clerks of the university accused of crimes in the university should be taken by the mayor and bailiffs of Cambridge and imprisoned at the order of the chancellor of the university until delivered by him. Now many such malefactors so imprisoned have brought writs of trespass and of oyer and terminer against the chancellor and proctors maliciously entangling them. If they do not have amends the university will be undone. They request remedy.
Nature of endorsement
1) Coram rege et magno consilio.2) Let the charters in this petition be declared, and let it be granted to them that the chancellor and scholars should not be impeached by the justices or other ministers of the king or his heirs because of such imprisonments made by them by virtue of their charters.
Places mentioned
Cantebrigge (Cambridge), [Cambridgeshire].

The petition can be firmly dated to 1336 by the writ addressed to the mayor and bailiff in accordance with the petition and response (CCR 1333-7, pp.559-60).
