Description
Petitioners
Monks of the Cistercian order in England
Addressees
King and his council
Nature of request
The monks state that the king's ancestors forbade persons of religion to make payments overseas. They are now against their will charged with a tenth by the abbot of Citeaux to be paid to the pope. They have agreed to pay another tenth to the king with the other clergy, and if they are distrained by the pope to pay the tenth then they will not be able to fulfil their obligations in chantries and alms, and will be in peril of the statute. They request letters to the proctors of the pope assigned to levy the tenth that they should not collect the tenth granted by the abbot, and writs to the abbots of the order in England that they should not contribute to it.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be forbidden by writs of prohibition to the abbots and priors of the order in England to make payments against the statute.
