Nature of request
The bishop requests remedy for although he had a charter of liberties that granted that he may have the fines and amercements from his tenants and other men of his fee by whatever manner of trespass, nevertheless the justices assigned by the late king to hear and determine all manner of trespasses, oppressions and extortions made to his people indicted his tenants and other men of the fee before them that they had levied more by extortions than was due to the king for which they paid a fine . . . the men made tallies . . . supposing this was for the debt of the king had been served of it.
Nature of endorsement
Let the estreats sent to the Exchequer and also the records that are sent into treasury be examined, and if they find by these that the men and tenants of those who have fines and amercements by charter, have made fine for those extortions, oppressions and excesses where the king has been fully served of what belongs to him as principle, then the treasurer and barons are to allow those who have such charters to have the fines and amercements from their men and tenants according to their charters, notwithstanding that the rolls of the justices of their estreats are entitled 'de denariis Regis concelatis'.
