Description
Petitioners
? No Petitioner named
Nature of request
Copy of a writ of Edward III to his son the earl of Chester or his justice concerning the complaint of the abbot of Chester about his unwilling tenure of the mills of Chester, the distraint that he has suffered, and the failure of the earl to do justice to him. The king orders that he is to be certified if the abbot or his predecessors took the farm, and other matters relating to it.
Nature of endorsement
[Endorsement of the Earl of Chester]:When the rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer of Chester and in the earl's possession have been searched it was not found that the mill of Chester was taken at farm by the abbot or by his predecessors, but because it has been established that the last predecessor of the abbot held the mills at the time of the earl's father making payment at the Exchequer for them, and the present abbot during the time of the king, the earl's father and the earl's time continued this payment for it for that reason the abbot is distrained at this day for as much as it is in arrears.
