Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/38/1878
Date
[? 1340]
Description
Petitioners
Griffith de Cautetone (Cantington), Archdeacon of Carmarthen
Name(s)
de Cautetone (Cantington), Griffith
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Archdeacon of Carmarthen
Nature of request
Cautetone states that his predecessor leased some land to the archdeacon of Cardigan for fifteen years. That archdeacon forfeited to the king's grandfather, and petitioned for its return in parliament. It was found by inquisition that he had a full right and the matter was ordered before the justices assigned to hold the plea for further discussion and the sheriff of Hereford was ordered to make people of the area come before them. They did not come because the writ was addressed to that sheriff. Cautetone requests that the justices be ordered that they order by their writs to the justice of Wales to make the people of the country come, and to enquire of Oweyn ap Griffith's right and return the inquisition before the justices so that right can be done to him
Nature of endorsement
Let the writ be ordered to the justices assigned to hold the pleas of the king that they order by their writ of judgement to the justices of Wales or his lieutenant that they make the people of the country come before the justices so assigned, and they do right.
Places mentioned
Carmarthen, [Carmarthenshire, Wales]
Westminster
People mentioned
Meredith ap Gourwared, late Archdeacon of Carmarthen
Oweyn ap Griffith, late archdeacon of Cardigan
Note
The petition might date to 1340 when a full exemplification of the record and process relating to the claim was enrolled (CPR 1338-40, pp.552-4). However, it is possible that this petition represents an earlier stage, and when the petitioner failed to reclaim his land further action followed. The guard dates the petition to?1328, but it remains unclear whether this has any real foundation.
