Nature of request
The tenants state that Clifford, when he was keeper of the archbishopric during a vacancy, distrained them to make recognisances to the king which they have never made when the see was full or vacant. Moraunt and Claydon the present keepers are continuing the demands to their great damage. They request remedy.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they scrutinise the rolls and memoranda of vacancies before Clifford's time to inquire of the veracity of the contents in the petition, and if it is necessary they should do justice on the complaints.

The petition can be very closely dated as it was presented whilst the keepers Moraunt and Claydon were still keepers. Bishop Winchelsea died on 11 May 1313, and the keepers were ordered to deliver the temporalities to his successor on 3 January 1314. The petition must be dated to 1313 (Handbook of Dates; CPR 1313-17, p.77).
