Nature of request
1) It is stated that Sergeux when he was sheriff falsely returned into that Maryn had surrendered into his prison and died there in his keeping. The coroner found that he had nothing from Maryn because he was still alive, the king losing the forfeiture by the sheriff's deceit. The petitioners request that it be ordained that Sergeux suffer the penalty that the law demands in these cases to the king's profit and as an example to others.2) Also Sergeux when he was sheriff had two servants Colyn and Glade. Colyn killed Glade in Sergeux's presence, but Sergeux received Colyn and maintained him so that no one could indict Colyn.3) Also Sergeux ordered John Symond to present his bastard son to the church of St Ladock, and plotted to make him lose his presentation because he had presented someone else.4) Also that Sergeux aided and abetted William Bir to go to the house of John de Trefarthian and kill him and his father so that Sergeux could inherit the Trefarthan lands.5) Also that Sergeux abetted John Bostowen and others ousting William Frankelain, his wife and children from his house and lands in the vill of Kylygarth taking his goods and chattels and detaining the lands.6) Also Sergeux abetted Thomas and Guy, parsons to enter the manors of Pomeray, which he had of the gift of Huwyssh until Pomeray made fine for their return.
Nature of endorsement
Let this bill be ordered to the justices assigned for the taking of the assize in the counties of Devon and Cornwall between William Carmenowe and John Sergeux and others, and let the truth of this be enquired of before them.

Note
The petition dates to 1377-8. Sergeux was sheriff from 1 October 1375 to 26 October 1376. Sergeux probably also held the office in 1388-9, but the draft writ in which this petition was enclosed (dated 10 December 1377) confirms the earlier date.
