Reference
SC 8/38/1867
Date
[1377-1378]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph Carmenowe, knight, brother of William Carmenowe; William Carmenowe, brother of Ralph Carmenowe.
Name(s)
Carmenowe; Carmenowe, Ralph; William
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Carmenowes show that Ralph and Siregeux inherited the manors of Chambernon, having married Chambernon's two daughters and heirs. Siregeux with his allies came to his manor of Boconnoc and beat him and his daughter, carrying away their goods. Having enfeoffed his estates and holding them for a term of years, Ralph was again assaulted by Siregeux by colour of his office as sheriff and ejecting him from his manor. They request remedy, namely two assizes in the counties for William Carmenowe, and an oyer and terminer for Ralph Carmenowe for the term of years and the taking of his goods and chattels.
Nature of endorsement
Let this bill be ordered to the justices assigned for the taking of the assize in the counties of Devon and Cornwall between William Carmenowe and John Sieregeux, and let the truth of this be enquired of before them.
Places mentioned
Devon
Cornwall
Bockonnok (Boconnoc), [Cornwall]
People mentioned
William Chambernon
John Siregeux (Sergeux), Sheriff of Cornwall.
Note
The petition dates to 1377-8. Sergeux was sheriff from 1 October 1375 to 26 October 1376. Sergeux probably also held the office in 1388-9, but the draft writ attached to this petition (dated 10 December 1377) confirms the earlier date.
