Nature of request
Carecter shows that he has a boat in the king's service in Gascony at his costs for the commonalty of Scarborough and lost equipment from it for which the commonalty will not reimburse him. He requests that the king grant him his writ to the bailiffs and the worthy men of the town that they restore to him his damages for their contribution.

The petition appears to date to c. 1296 when the sheriffs of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Northumberland were ordered to collect and prepare 100 ships for the king's use (CPR 1292-1301, p.180).
