Nature of request
Halton states that his houses and place in Newcastle were restored to him. Now the burgesses have come and demolished the houses and dug a ditch through his place. He has come to the king to seek restoration of his losses and his damages by which he requests that restoration be made to him with the waste and repair of them, the burgesses having requested to the king to approve them.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered to the sheriff of Northumberland to enquire of the reason that the burgesses demolished the bishop's houses and dug the ditch, namely whether it was to defend the town against the king's enemies, and other articles in the presence of the mayor.And when it is viewed by the council, if it is found that the premises were made for the salvation of the town or by order of the king, that then the king ought to make allowance to the bishop for the losses.
