Reference
SC 8/38/1854
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
John Caperich
Name(s)
Caperich, John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Caperich states that Mortimer because of the ill will that he had for him imprisoned him without cause or process and ransomed him for £20, and he still resides there. He requests that the king ordain a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justice of South Wales that they inform themselves by inquisition or by other means of the cause and the manner of the imprisonment, and if he finds reasonable cause then he is to certify the king of it; and if he finds that it was done without cause or process then he is to take sufficient mainprise to answer to the king when he will have to explain the delivery.
Places mentioned
Gales (Wales)
People mentioned
Roger de Mortimer, late Justice of Wales
Note
The guard notes suggest that this petition should be dated to c. 1322 and that it followed Edward II's replacement of Roger Mortimer of Chirk as justice of Wales in January 1322 (CFR 1319-27, pp.86-7). There seems no reason to date this as late as 1330-1 as Rees has done (Petitions Relating to Wales, p.48).
