Date
[1331-1377]
Description

Richard de Cantebregg (Cambridge), Keeper of the chantry of the house of Thele.
Name(s)
de Cantebregg (Cambridge), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Keeper of the chantry of the house of Thele
Nature of request
Cantebregg shows that Goldington founded the house of Thele for one keeper . . . for the souls of the king's father, the founder and others, and gave . . .. The men of the king and queen and of other great lords came . . . so that they are not able to live. They request the king's protection so that they are able to live, and to finish the chantry.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have protection by the grace of the king.He does not wish to do anything concerning the corn.
Places mentioned
Thele (Stanstead St Margarets), [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
William de Goldyngton (Goldington), late king's justice
Robert de Vere, Earl of Oxford
Queen of England.
Note
Datable from internal evidence to the period between the death of Robert de Vere, earl of Oxford (1331) and the death of Edward III (1377). Although this has to be after 1331 (so that the dating to c. 1327 on the guard is certainly wrong), the guard is probably right in dating this to the earlier part of Edward III's reign.
