Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Canonsleigh
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The petitioners requests remedy as they were enfeoffed of certain tenements and rents in perpetuity by the king's ancestors, but when the king was in Wales the bishop of Exeter came with his chaplains, clerks and esquires and entered the priory and ejected them, seizing their property, goods and rent without conviction by judgement of any kind of trespass and established an abbess and nuns there.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is enrolled elsewhere.

Note
Datable to the episcopate of Peter Quinel, bishop of Exeter (1280-91), referred to in the petition. The comments on the guard suggest a narrower date of c. 1283 referring to Dugdale's Monasticon and to the king's presence in Wales, and this remains a strong possibility.
