Reference
SC 8/37/1830
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Bindon
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners state that Montagu by favour and power was made abbot of the house, but was subsequently removed for this and for great trespasses that he had done by the abbot of Ford, the visitor. It was ordained by the chapter general that he should be kept in perpetual custody. However he often does the house harm by escaping from his keepers. The petitioners request that the abbots of Beaulieu and Netley be ordered that they securely keep Montagu.
Nature of endorsement
Let the abbots do what can be done by the rule of their order.
Places mentioned
Bindon, [Dorset]
People mentioned
John de Montagu, late Abbot of Bindon
Abbot of Ford
Abbot of Beaulieu
Abbot of Netley
Note
The petition seems to date to c. 1331 when reference occur in the patent rolls concerning the arrest of Montagu, then described as an apostate monk of Bindon. At this time it would seem that he was still supposed to be at Bindon, so it is possible that the petition is a little later when Montagu had been entrusted to the keeping of other abbots (CPR 1330-4,pp.89, 142).
