Reference
SC 8/37/1818
Date
[1315]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Burton, chaplain
Name(s)
de Burton, Thomas
Occupation
chaplain
Nature of request
Burton states that he is being maliciously summoned and persecuted by Chertham so that he can no longer say mass to the prejudice of the king. He is now aware of the short time of his life and wishes to do some act of charity free of challenge by false ordinaries by their greed. He requests that Beverley and Burton two scholars of Oxford and his pupils be appointed to churches that he holds or to which he has letters of advancement.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege and it should be handed back to Lord Roger de Northburgh.
Places mentioned
Canterbury diocese
Newchurch, [Kent]
People mentioned
Thomas de Chertham, Commissary in the diocese of Canterbury
Robert de Beverle (Beverley), Scholar of Oxford
Walter de Burton, Scholar of Oxford
Roger de Mortivax (Martival), Bishop elect of Salisbury
Prior of Ware
Roger de Northburgh
Note
The petition can be quite closely dated by the reference to Roger de Martivale as bishop elect of Salisbury in the petition, and to Roger de Nortthburgh in the response. Martivale was elected and consecrated in 1315, and at this time Northburgh was keeper of the privy seal, so a likely recipient of the petition (cf. Handbook of British Chronology).
