Reference
SC 8/37/1811
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Burgh
Name(s)
de Burgh, John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Burgh shows that the late bishop had leased the king's mine to the abbot of Tavistock in return for a debt owed to him by the king even though the debt was far less than the profits from the mine. The bishop has taken the profits and put it in his treasury at Exeter, and much of it is still there in the possession of the bishop's executor.
Nature of endorsement
The petition is to be sent by writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they examine the matters by inquisition or in other ways the things contained in the petition. And if they should find that it is so, they are to do what they consider is best for the king.
Places mentioned
Devon
People mentioned
Richard Coliz, late keeper of the king's mine in Devon
Walter [de Stapledon], Bishop of Exeter and Treasurer
Abbot of Tavistock
Richard de Stapledon, brother and executor of Bishop Stapledon
Note
The guard comment places this after the death of Bishop Stapledon in October 1326. As the petition refers to Stapledon's executor this is a reasonable assessment, though there is nothing to narrow this date down.
