Reference
SC 8/37/1805
Date
[1451-1454]
Description
Petitioners
John Bunteyn (Buntayn), Merchant of Haverfordwest; John Clerk, Merchant of Haverfordwest.
Name(s)
Bunteyn (Buntayn); Clerk, John; John
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Haverfordwest, [Pembrokeshire, Wales]
West Wales
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
The petitioners state that they were in Bordeaux with their merchandise at the time of the last vintage when the city fell and purchased a safe conduct to return home, and to return to Bordeaux with a ship and cargo and carry away the goods and merchandise they had left behind. They request a licence from the king to make the voyage.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Note
The petition dates to 1451-1454. It is not entirely clear whether this petition follows the fall of Bordeaux on 29 June 1451, or its final fall in October 1453 following the earl of Shrewsbury's defeat and death at the battle of Castillon. The earlier date perhaps make more sense, as merchants may well have found it hard to get to Bordeaux in 1453.
