Reference
SC 8/36/1780A
Date
[1323-1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Broghton (Broughton).
Name(s)
de Broghton (Broughton), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Broghton shows that he was injured by Cliff and Hendleby. Despenser, when he was outlawed, held the manor of Carlton, and Damory came and said that he had exchanged the manor with Despenser before his outlawry, who sold him corn from the manor for which he paid Damory's bailiffs in full. Despenser was restored to the lands and by a writ of enquiry. Broghton was attached for purchasing the corn and was threatened if he did not grant to Hundleby his land in Broughton and elsewhere without paying him anything. He requests remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
Carlton le Moorland, Lincolnshire
Bassingham, Lincolnshire
Broghton (Brant Broughton), [Lincolnshire]
Lendham (Leadenham), [Lincolnshire]
Thragelthorp (Stragglethorpe), [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
William de Clif (Cliff)
Richard de Hundelby (Hundleby), valet of William de Cliff
Hugh le Despenser
Roger Damary (Damory)
William Aylemer.
Note
The petition is likely to date to 1323-1327. The petition refers to Despenser's outlawry which must be the period when the Despenser's were exiled in 1322, and subsequently restored in the rebellion of Thomas of Lancaster. It is not clear whether this could be as late as 1327, though one might not have expected Broghton to complain against Despenser in his lifetime.
