Nature of request
They show that they and their companions were hired by the people of London to go with the king to Gloucester, and were in his company for a quarter of a year. By default they had returned to have aid and provisions from their masters for them and their companions who remained with the king until their return, but before they could return the mayor imprisoned them in Newgate where many of their companions are dead, and they are in peril of their lives. They request grace and remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The sheriff is ordered that he release them by good mainprise to answer to the king at his will if it is by that reason and not for any other that they are in prison.Coram rege.

Note
The internal reference is apparently to the army that Queen Isabella and Prince Edward took to Gloucester in the winter of 1326-7 during the crisis that would culminate in the deposition of Edward II. The petition is therefore likely to date from early in Edward III's reign.
