Nature of request
1) The prior shows that his house is ruined because the tithes on purchases and expenses of the castle of Builth which amount to a fifth or sixth of the house's maintenance, and were granted to them by charter by the former lords of Builth, and were paid to them, but are now withdrawn.2) The prior ought to have his free court of his tenants of Builth by a charter of the king's ancestors, but Giffard will not allow them to have it.3) Similarly Giffard will not allow him to have the prises of ale from his people building on his tenement.4) The prior's people ought to be quit of toll, but the bailiffs of Giffard distrain them to pay toll.The prior requests remedy as Giffard has often had commandments but will do nothing.1)
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ be made to the sheriff of Hereford and Roger le Rus that in the presence of Giffard or his lieutenant the prior and someone who can advise them of the king's reasons be summoned before them, and let them do justice to the plaintiffs.2) [Identical endorsement in Latin, the first being in French].3) It finds the king seised and does not wish that he be ousted from his estate.

Note
The petition almost certainly dates to 1290 for a commission of oyer and terminer to Roger de Burghull, the then sheriff of Herefordshire and Roger le Rus was issued on 12 June 1290 to examine the complaints of the prior about Giffard (CPR 1281-92, p.402). The findings were detailed in a writ to Giffard to allow the prior's rights on 13 January 1292 (CCR 1288-96, pp.213-4).
