Nature of request
The petitioners state that they have suffered great damage as they are wrongfully penalised by the count, Flavale and burgomasters and aldermen their merchant people of England, namely John le Goldbeter, Richard de Selby and others going there with their goods and merchandises. They have imprisoned them and divided their goods amongst them for a debt that they claim the king owes them in contempt of the king and to their great damage and impoverishment. They request that a remedy be ordained.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Let certain good and faithful men be assigned by a commission of the great seal to enquire of the matters contained in the petition. And when the inquisition is returned and the theft found to be made, if the sea route is closed then let arrest be made on the peers and commoners of the thieves, but this is not to extend to the goods of merchants residing in England nor to free tenants in England; if the sea crossing be open then let the lords there be ordered to do justice.

Note
The petition is very likely to date to 1343 as a related notification referring to both Henry and John Goldbeter and seizures made by Favale, with reference to similar arrests being made by the count of Flanders and the burgomasters and aldermen of Bruges, dates to 10 September 1343. It is possible that this notification and the inquisitions referred to in it are actually the result of the petition.
