Description
Petitioners
William de Brewose (Braose).
Name(s)
de Brewose (Braose), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Brewose shows that he and his ancestors held the lordship of Gower from the king and his ancestors; the Mowbrays then held it, and it came into the hands of the king by the forfeiture of John de Mowbray. It is now held by de Burgh by the feoffment of Despenser. He requests remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He should go to Chancery and have a full assize of novel disseisin.
Places mentioned
Gower, [Glamorgan, Wales].
People mentioned
John de Moubray (Mowbray)
Aline [de Moubray, Mowbray], wife of John de Mowbray
Elizabeth [de Burgh], widow of John de Burgh
John de Burgh
Hugh le Despenser, the son.
Note
The petition seems to date to the period between 1322 and 1326. Mowbray forfeited his estates in 1322, and the petitioner was certainly dead by 1326, and perhaps as early as 1324 (CPR 1321-4, pp.432-3; CFR 1319-27, p.388).
