Nature of request
The petitioners state that in the times of war with France they were sent by order of the king from London to Guernsey to garrison the castle and later returned. Because they were supposed to be paid their wages by Cheyney, the keeper of the Isles they put a petition into parliament at London of these arrears, and Cheyney's attorneys were examined on the matter and was found to owe them part of it and was ordered by a writ to pay it to the petitioners. When he failed to pay he was ordered to be in Chancery to show why he should not make payment, and came and postponed the case from day to day, and on the last day did not come. Upon this the petitioners requested execution of the payment, but the Chancellor did not wish to do so. They request that the king and his council command execution against Cheyney of the sum or that he be warned to come into court to say if he knows anything why he ought not to pay, and if he knows nothing then he be condemned.
Nature of endorsement
They should have a writ in Chancery just as before and sue against Cheyney.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1306, for by 20 April 1307 the petitioners were acknowledging that they had received full satisfaction for the arrears owed to them (CCR 1302-7, p.534).
