Date
[1290-1307]
Description
Petitioners
Peter Breton; John Breton brother of Peter
Name(s)
Breton; Breton, Peter; John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners show that Coperas died suddenly without making a testament in 15 Edward I whereupon Grange and others have taken his lands, tenements and chattels by means of a false testament made shortly after he had died when they should have escheated into the hand of the king because no certain heir was known, and had it proved by Symplyngham to the disinheritance of the petitioners. They have granted the lands and tenements to religious and lay men and have obstructed the petitioners for three years and more to their great damage. They request remedy and that the king summon before the auditors of pleas Grange, Clerk and Lock and convict them of this by valid verdict of a jury.
Nature of endorsement
In Chancery to have the inheritance; and before the bishop to recover their chattels.
Places mentioned
Portsmouth, [Hampshire]
People mentioned
Peter Coperas of Portsmouth, late cousin of the petitioners
John de la Graunge (Grange), bailiff of Portsmouth
Clement Le Clerk of Portsmouth
Henry Loc (Lock)
Henry de Symplyngham, official of Winchester
Note
Dated on guard to c. 1300 but attributable to 1290-1307 on the basis that the petition refers to a lapse of 'three years and more' since the regnal year 15 Edward I and is within that king's own reign.
