SC 8/35/1736
Date
[c. 1290]
Description
Petitioners
William de Boys, brother and heir of John de Boys
Name(s)
de Boys, William
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Boys states that he does not hold anything of the king except two knight's fees from the honour of Peveril which is in the hand of the king by escheat. The escheator came and entered into the manors of Boys which are not held of the king but of other lords and has levied the rents and issues and tallaged the free and unfree tenants. Boys requests that the issues and rents that are levied from the manors which are not held of the king be delivered to him since if he was a minor they would pertain to the lords of the fees from whom they were held, by which he demands the rents and issues in the meantime according to Magna Carta and the statute of Marlborough.
Nature of endorsement
Elsewhere at the Exchequer so that it should be known how much is held of the crown, and how much of the honour.Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Honour of Peveril, [Derbyshire]
People mentioned
John de Boys, brother of the petitioner
Henry de Bray, Escheator
Note
The petition is probably close in date to a writ to the escheator issued on 13 March 1290 to deliver the lands of the petitioner's late brother to the petitioner. It is possible that the writ is actually a response to the petition (CFR 1272-1307, p.273)
