Bowes shows that after the departure of the king and his host from Stanhope Park the Scots came to Richmondshire which they intended to raid until the community of Richmondshire made a fine with Douglas to be paid within three weeks, and to guarantee the payment gave hostages, including Bowes and others, and they remained hostages for a year and more, and they were forced to sell their goods, chattels, lands and tenements for their deliverance because the commons of Richmondshire did not pay the fine to the hostages' great impoverishment. They request that the king and council ordain a remedy.
