Description

King and council
Nature of request
The sokemen state that the Abbot of St James outside Northampton has claimed from them services which they should not perform. They complained about this and obtained a writ of monstraverunt, but the Abbot has ill-treated them in many ways as a result. They request the king's grace and aid in this matter, and a letter to the Exchequer to search Domesday so that they might know how the land ought to be held, as a replacement for a letter previously granted to them, which was stolen from their attorney. They also ask that the Abbot might be ordered to show his evidence for his claim. They ask the king's grace and aid to be maintained in their rightful estate, paying their proper annual rent as the charter of Domesday demands.
