Reference
SC 8/34/1688
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Elizabeth Blount, widow of William Blount, knight
Name(s)
Blount, Elizabeth
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Blount states that she and her husband purchased certain lands and tenements from diverse people in Cumberland, and were seised of the same until William Blount adhered to the Scottish enemies, and died. By which adherence the lands and tenements were seized into the hand of the king's father, who gave part of the lands to Loghmaban, and the remainder remain in the hand of the king. Blount requests that she be able to have the lands and tenements, and ordain a remedy otherwise she will be deprived forever.
Nature of endorsement
Concerning lands which are in the king's hand she should sue against the king. Concerning the lands that are in the hands of others she should aid herself by the common law.
Places mentioned
Cumberland
Blencogo, [Cumberland]
People mentioned
William Blount, knight, husband of the petitioner
William de Loghmaban
Note
It does not seem possible to date this petition accurately as the grant to Loghmaban was made on 28 June 1323, and later references are in 1342 (CFR 1319-27, pp.217-8; CPR 1340-3, p.458). The date of c.1327 suggested by the guard seems feasible, but no evidence survives to support it. Loghmaban remained in possession until his death in 1342 (Bain, vol.III, p.250).
