Nature of request
The abbot and convent show that they suffered diverse grievances by Edward I's host in the last war in Wales, into which matter the king ordered an inquisition by a writ to his justice of Wales, the which damages amounted to £260 12s. as appears by the inquisition. The abbot and convent request that the king grant to them by their letters patent and their people residing on the land which they hold from the king ought to have the right to defend their right in all manner of quarrels which may be against them or not before the justices of the land or his lieutenant.

It seems to the council that if it pleases the king that it is right that they have men of law to defend their right, and particularly because they are men of Holy Church, and not of his jurisdiction in law.Coram rege.
