Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The masters charged their boats with wines, salt, drapes and with other diverse merchandises and departed to England and passed through many places in the power of the king of France in peace time, and there came people of Normandy, Picardy and of other places in the power of the king of France arrayed for war and seized them and their boats to the value of £1,700, and they were imprisoned to their great ruin. The king had ordered by his letters to the king of France that due restoration be made to the merchants of the sum and damages, but they have still not received restitution. They request a writ of arrest.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Let certain good men be assigned by a commission of the great seal to inquire both by the oath of merchants as of others if the robbery was made as the petition supposed, and by whom, and of whose power they are, and of what goods and merchandises they were robbed, and of what value, and of other articles, and when the inquisition was returned, and if it was made when the passage of the sea was closed as it is now, then they should have arrest upon the countrymen of the robbers, but not from the goods and merchandises of merchants residing in England, nor those who had free tenements in England. If the passage be open when the inquisition be returned then let it be ordered to the lords to do right, and let it be further held by ancient course.
