[Damaged petition concerning the abbot of Battle]The abbot shows that he had impleaded Robert atte Bregge and others before the justices of the Bench that they took and carried away the goods and chattels of the abbot to the value of £20 at Dungeness. Bregge and the others responded that the place where the abbot stated that the trespass took place was within the liberty of the Cinque ports according to the letters close of Edward I, and they should not answer. The abbot said that they should not be excused by this, and that Dungeness pertained to their manor of Wye by their charter of William I, and not within the liberty. The abbot requests that the letters close should not undo the charter of William I.1)
