Reference
SC 8/34/1654
Date
[c. 1359]
Description
Petitioners
Davy de Barry
Name(s)
de Barry, Davy
Addressees
Council of the king
Nature of request
Barry requests the restoration of his Irish lands and the issues from them for he has lands in Ireland and in Pembrokeshire, and went to the latter in 32 Edw. III and was there appointed as a keeper of the coast by the king's commission. At the same time a writ was sent to the justice of Ireland for all those with lands on the Irish marches to go to them and reside there. Because he did not go as he was residing and serving in Pembrokeshire, because he did not get a licence to cross the seas, and because he has been held responsible for trespasses made by his servants his Irish lands have been seized, though it seems to him this is against law and reason
Nature of endorsement
. . . he did not reside at all in England by the king's command, and his lands in Ireland were not seized because of the causes contained in the bill, but because of debts that his father owed as sheriff of Cork.
Places mentioned
Ireland
Pembrokeshire, [Wales]

Note
The petition refers to events in 32 Edw. III, so it would seem likely that this petition was not too long after this. It seems probable that the petition perhaps dates to 1359 to 1360. Certainly Barry was returning to Ireland in 1361 when he had letters nominating attorneys in England and Wales. It is perhaps tempting to see Barry's return as a response to the failure of the petition, returning to Ireland to recover his lands (CPR 1358-61, p.567). The guard dates this to a wider range of years making it 1360-1370 purely on the basis of the patent roll references to Barry's return to Ireland in 1361, and a later reference to Barry having protection whilst in the king's service in Ireland in 1370, the latter of which seems to have no real pertinence to this petition, and there being no real reason for the circumspection about the date of the petition (CPR 1367-70, p.359).
