SC 8/34/1653
Date
[c. 1314]
Description
Petitioners
Alexander de Bastenthwayt (Bassenthwaite), assessor and collector of tax in Cumberland; Robert de Bampton, assessor and collector of tax in Cumberland.
Name(s)
de Bastenthwayt (Bassenthwaite); de Bampton, Alexander; Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Cumberland.
Nature of request
Bastenthwayt and Bampton state that they were assigned as assessors and collectors in Cumberland of a tax [the twentieth and fifteenth of 1313] by a commission made to them on 1 December 1313. Because of the destruction wrought in the county by the Scots the petitioners have not been able to tax, and they are now distrained to come to the Exchequer to render account. They request that the king order the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they be discharged of this account.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons in the presence of whom the account is demanded that they should make enquiry upon the contents of the petition and if they are able to establish this to be the case then they should desist from demanding the payment of this account.
Note
The petition is likely to date to c. 1314 for Bampton and Bastenthwayt were appointed as collectors on 28 November 1313, and Bastenthwayt was the subject of a commission to audit his accounts for sums that he paid to the Scots, so it is likely that the sums of the subsidy were not collected in 1314 (CPR 1313-17, pp.50 & 240). The tax was the twentieth and fifteenth granted in the autumn of 1313.
