Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of the town of Bamburgh.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses show that they pay annually for the farm of the town twenty-six marks at the Exchequer, and have often been ruined by the Scots, and have not asked for nothing from the king, and have received nothing. Now they are completely burnt out and their neighbours have been captured and nothing remains. They request that the king pardon them their farm until the town is repopulated, and also of six marks of their farm in arrears from the last year. They also request that the king command to the constable of the castle that they have free admission to the castle where they shelter at their own cost and help keeping watch and guard.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.
Places mentioned
Bamburgh, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Constable of the castle of Bamburgh.
Note
The petition is firmly dated to 1318 as a writ was issued to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to acquit the burgesses as they had requested on 26 November 1318, and at the same time the constable of the castle was ordered to acquit them (CCR 1318-23, p.40).
