Nature of request
The chapter show that they were granted by the king's progenitors four thrives of wheat from each carucate of land in the East Riding called the thrives of Saint John to pray for the king and his progenitors. Many now withhold this so that they are now unable to maintain the prayers, and this is a great part of their sustenance. They requests that the king ordain some of his council to hear their evidence and maintain the justice of the gift of the king' progenitors and his and the Church's right.
