Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/33/1642
Date
[c. 1361]
Description
Petitioners
John Brewes (Braose).
Name(s)
Brewes (Braose), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Brewes shows that because it was found by an inquisition taken before Houton that he was an idiot all his lands and tenements were seized into the hand of the king, and afterwards Brewes was ordered to be before the council and was examined and it was found that he was not an idiot, but the lands are still in the king's hands. Brewes requests that restitution be made to him.
Nature of endorsement
He should have writs of scire facias to the land tenants to be in the Chancery on certain days to show if they know of anything to say why the lands should not be seised in the king's hand and delivered to Brewes.
People mentioned
John de Houton, baron of the Exchequer.
Note
The petition dates to c.1361, for it by a writ to the escheator in Lincolnshire it is clear that the inquisition ordered in the response to this petition had been held, and Brewes was found not to be an idiot (CCR 1360-4, p.189). The petition is unlikely to have predated this by long.
