Reference
SC 8/33/1636
Date
[c. 1272]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Berwik (Berwick).
Name(s)
de Berwik (Berwick), Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
1) Berwik shows that Prior Simon has appropriated the vills of West Chirton and Backworth and have claimed that they are within their franchise, extending his legal right, allowing felons to come and go, and allowing the selling of products there forestalling the king and escaping justice.2) Because Berwik has asked the prior to do him justice he has threatened him with withholding part of a debt owing to Berwik's father and concerning a tenement in Tynemouth, he asks for the king's aid as this is in the liberty of Tynemouth.
Nature of endorsement
[Endorsement not recoverable].
Places mentioned
West Chirton, [Northumberland]
Bacworte (Backworth), [Northumberland]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland]
Tynemouth, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Simon, Prior of Tynemouth
Richard de Middelton, Chancellor
Walter Rackedoyllye.
Note
The document refers both to King Henry 'your father' and to Richard de Middleton 'your chancellor'. Middleton, archdeacon of Northumberland, was the last chancellor of Henry III, but was replaced almost immediately by Edward. This probably dates the petition to the early months of Edward I's reign.
