Occupation
Dean of St Buryan, Cornwall
Nature of request
The dean shows that the dean and canons find a chaplain to celebrate masses in the royal free chapel, and sequestered the prebendaries of the canons to pay for the chaplain because they did not wish to pay for him. To the dean belongs the right to give the prebendaries of the chapel without making a presentment to any bishop. Beaupre came and claimed to have a prebend in the chapel from the gift of Bishop Stapeldon, encroaching on the king by the maintenance of Beaupre. The dean purchased a prohibition against Beaupre who then came with armed men to the church and attempted to break into it. The sheriff came and took the goods of the prebendaries into the hand of the king and queen. The dean requests that the king and queen order the sheriff to remove his hand and deliver the sequestrations to the dean so that he be able to rule his canons, that the service be fully made and maintained as the ordinance made between the dean and canons wished so that the dean is in full possession of all manner of jurisdiction ordained after the death of Bishop Walter as fully as his predecessors enjoyed in the time of the king's grandfather and father; he requests that the king and queen ordain a remedy in Beaupre's actions against the prohibition, and order him not to encroach upon the king or his free chapel, and present his case to the king to which the dean is able to inform the king to guard the right of his crown.
