Nature of request
1) Matilda shows that her brother brought from Brabant to England goods and merchandise for her, which he and other merchants loaned to the king, for which Walter was assigned the customs of Ipswich receiving some of the money then he died, and the customs were taken into the king's hand. The merchants came and received the money and the great seal of the Exchequer and a bill of the Wardrobe and they sued until they were paid. Matilda came and demanded her debt and the merchants when they were paid rendered the seal and bill to the treasurer and barons . . . She has not been paid for 8 years or more and she is greatly impoverished, so that she cannot any longer endure.2) Portion of a separate petition of Berklem concerning William Servet and old debt, though insufficient remains to reconstruct its contents.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they examine the letters patent and bills which Matilda has having called before them William Servat they are to make . . . to Maud as much as they rightly could . . . because of her poverty.
