Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The burgesses state that the king granted for the growth of the town, and his profit, the crofts and void places in the town. Now Nicholas de Carlisle and others come and demand these crofts and places to be held of the king in fee to the disinheritance of the king and the great damage of the burgesses when merchants coming daily to the town wanted the empty places to lodge because of the great liberties granted to the town by the king. If the king grants these places between the town and the sea they would have no access to the sea. And if he grants the places out of his hand the share of the town belonging to those who take them will be greater than the king's town. They request that the king grant some remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland]
People mentioned
Nicholas de Kardoyl (Carlisle), purchaser of the king
Note
The petition is firmly dated to 1302 by an inquisition made into Carlisle's holdings, and the eventual grant of the empty spaces to the burgesses (Bain, vol. II, pp.332-3; CChR 1300-26, pp.89-90).
