Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Bermondsey
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The prior and monks show that their house and lands have been destroyed for a long time by the course of the Thames so that they are much impoverished, and they and their predecessors have let a great part of their possessions into the hands of others, so that what remains to them is not sufficient to sustain the monks and make the charges fitting for them to bear. Following further damage inflicted on their land they are, like other religious, to pay per annum £100 to the king that is now demanded. They request that the king make grace to them of the fine so that they can repair the banks and ditches pertaining to their house to protect them and their neighbours.
Nature of endorsement
They should have respite of the principal until the feast of St Michael.
