Reference
SC 8/32/1562
Date
[1302]
Description
Petitioners
Roger de Bavent
Name(s)
de Bavent, Roger
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Dover, [Kent]
Brandeston, [Suffolk]
Hachesham (Hatcham), [Surrey].
Nature of request
Roger de Bavent states that he owes 10s. every thirty weeks for the keeping of Dover castle, for the manors of Brandeston and Hatcham, which were in the king's hands for nine years and more, until All Saints last, and that the Warden of Dover is distraining him for the arrears for this whole time. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to go to Chancery and the rolls are to be examined, to discover how long he was in the king's wardship, and when he did his homage; and justice will be done to him, as has been done in similar cases.
Note
CCR 1296-1302 p.545 is dated at Westminster, 10 August 1302, and mentions that the king received Roger's homage, on his coming of age, on 27 October 29 Edward I (1301), which makes it compatible with the reference to the date in the petition.
