Description
Petitioners
Peter Bavent; Margaret Bavent, wife of Peter Bavent.
Name(s)
Bavent; Bavent, Peter; Margaret
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Peter Bavent and Margaret his wife state that they were seised of various tenements in Eshot, Bockenfield, Tritlington and Earsden, through a remainder entailed on Margery and the heirs male of her body, by a fine levied in the king's court, but because an inquisition of office held before the Escheator of Northumberland found that one Roger de Maudut, adherent of the king's enemy Gilbert de Midelton, was seised of these tenements, they were seized into the king's hand, and Piers and Margaret expelled from them. They were then granted by charter to Roger's son Roger, and are now in the hands of his son John. They request a scire facias against the tenant, for him to give any reason he has why this charter should not be annulled and the tenements taken back into the king's hand and delivered to Piers and Margery.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent into Chancery, and there, when the fine which it mentions has been seen and examined, and the tenant duly warned, justice is to be done to the parties.
Places mentioned
Eshot, Northumberland
Bockenfield, Northumberland
Tritlington, Northumberland
Earsden, Northumberland.
People mentioned
Roger de Maudut (Mauduit)
Gilbert de Midelton (Middleton)
Roger [de Maudut (Mauduit)], son of Roger de Maudut
John [de Maudut], son of Roger de Maudut the younger.
Note
CPR 1358-61 p.51 is dated at Westminster, 10 May 1358. Northumberland Petitions, no.130, pp.155-6 discusses the subsequent regrants of this land within the family. A terminus ante quem may be provided by CPR 1367-70 p.318, on which a document dated at Westminster, 3 November 1369, mentions a Peter Bavent, 'chivaler', now deceased. Northumberland Petitions, no.130, pp.155-6, however, dates the petition as between 1358 and 1374, and in view of the uncertainty of the identity of this Peter Bavent, this has been followed.
