Reference
SC 8/32/1560
Date
[c. 1288]
Description
Petitioners
Agnes Bacun (Bacon).
Name(s)
Bacun (Bacon), Agnes
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Agnes Bacun states that she has sued four writs of mort d'ancestor concerning a messuage and an acre of land in Highworth against Richard de la Ryvere, but that nothing was done about the first three because of his bribes and the favour of the justices, and that on the fourth occasion she was intimidated into not attaching her writ; and since then she has been afraid to sue. She requests a remedy, and that she might obtain justice. And, since when the king issued his writ to the sheriff to distrain Richard de la Ryvere to appear before the king, John de Langeton said openly that she would have only writs of mort d'ancestor to plead within the county, she requests that he might be attached to answer to her before the king; and that she might come before the king and his council when she is summoned.
Nature of endorsement
In Chancery.
Places mentioned
Highworth, Wiltshire
Charlton, [Wiltshire]
Wilton, [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
Richard de la Ryvere
Robert Fouk, justice
Roger le Rus, justice
Solomon de Roucestre (Rochester), justice
Robert son of James (Fitz James), bailiff of Highworth
John de Langeton (Langton).
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1288, with reference to the fact that the initial writs were sued in 15 Edward I (November 1286 - November 1287). The reference to John de Langeton is compatible with this, since Langeton was keeper of the rolls of chancery from 1286 and chancellor 1292-1302, 1307-10: he appears in the petition in his capacity as a senior official of the chancery, but not necessarily as chancellor.
