Nature of request
The Abbot of Battle complains that the Keepers of the King's Market and the Keepers of the Alnage have entered the franchise of his abbey at Wye to perform their office there, and by distraint have levied fines and amercements from his men, contrary to the charters granted to the abbey by the king's ancestors and confirmed by him, and without regard for the abbot's challenge or the king's command to respect the abbot's franchises.
Nature of endorsement
Coram magno consilio.He is to have a writ pleadable before the king to the King's Clerk of the Market and Alnager, to answer there why, contrary to the tenor of the charters, they have entered the Abbot's liberty to exercise their office, contrary to the king's command, and why they do not let him have the amercements of his men etc.; and justice is to be done to him there.

Dated on the guard to '? c. 1318' with reference to CChR 1300-26, p.195, and also CCR 1313-18, p.556. Taking the reference to the confirmation of charters in 1318 as limiting it to the reign of Edward II, this petition must date 1318-1327.
